2016 Dorset team for Inter-County competition published

The ASA National County Team Championships 2016 will once again take place in the familiar Sheffield battleground with around 1,200 swimmers set to descend on Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Sunday 23 October. With a little over one month to go the countdown to this year’s competition has now begun with selections for the Dorset team being published as follows: Bournemouth Collegiate – Ella Chown, Honor Davies, Charlotte James, Kayla van der Merwe, Harriet Perfect, Izzy Pryce, Ben Samuel, Christian Tai, Finn Trehane;  Bridport Barracudas – Nathaniel Moorey;  Poole SC – Matt Collins, Jasmine Holmes, Jessica Kellaway, Jasmine McCrea, Jacob Peters, Jessica Richens, Luke Roxburgh;  Swim Bournemouth – Ella Bowman, Amy Brown, Henry Stanbrook, Josh Wickens; Tornadoes of South Dorset – Josh Frampton; West Dorset – Finley Jarvis, Daniel Kingman.

Alice Tai, with GB Paralympic team-mates Claire Cashmore, Stephanie Slater and Stephanie Millward, has stormed to victory in the 4 x 100m Medley Relay (34 points) on day nine of the Rio Games. Leaving Australia and the United States in silver and bronze medal positions respectively, the GB team qualified first from the heats and in taking the gold medal set a new World Record time of 4:45.23. Rio bronze for Alice!

Alice Tai has marked her Paralympian debut with a bronze medal in her very first event on day three of the 2016 Games in Rio. Finishing first in her heat of the S10 100m Backstroke with a time of 1:09.64, the Bournemouth Collegiate swimmer qualified third fastest for the final behind New Zealand favourite Sophie Pascoe and Hungary’s Bianka Pap. Turning into the final 50 metres in second place, Alice was overtaken by Pap over the last 25 metres but held off Canada’s Aurelie Rivard to touch third in 1:09.39. Sophie Pascoe (1:07.04) and Bianka Pap (1:07.95) took gold and silver medals respectively. ASA National Summer Championships 2016

The ASA National Summer Championships 2016 ended with Dorset swimmers bringing home a total of  six English Nationals medals, two gold and four silver. The five days of competition for swimmers ranked nationally 25-44 in their age group and event began on 1 August with Dorset swimmers competing from Bournemouth Collegiate SC, Christchurch Seagulls SC, Poole SC and Swim Bournemouth.

Day 5

The fifth and final day of the ASA National Summer Championships 2016 produced three medals for Dorset swimmers. Ella Chown (BCS) finished first in both heats and finals of the 12/13 years 50m Butterfly in times of 29.43 and 29.16 to take gold, while in the 17/overs Madison Kemp (Poole) qualified first in 28.70 and second in the final in 28.64 to earn a silver medal. Knocking three seconds plus off his entry time in the 13/14 years 200m Backstroke to qualify in second place on 2:18.55, Swim Bournemouth’s Oliver Fairman again finished in second place in the final on 2:17.07 to earn a silver medal. In the 15 years 50m Butterfly Jack Arnell (BCS) qualified in tenth place on 28.46 to finish in ninth on 27.96.

Day 4

The busiest day for Dorset so far with nine swimmers reaching finals, five of those making their mark in 50m Breaststroke, and ending with a gold medal for Izzy Pryce (BCS) who finished first and PB’d in both heats and finals (15 years) of that event in 34.49 and 34.27. In the next age group up, Charlotte James (BCS) qualified and finished in seventh place on 35.44 and 35.01 respectively, while in the boys 16 years Kelvin Wong (Swim Bournemouth) achieved eighth then seventh place with 32.24 and 31.89, Poole’s Luke Roxburgh (17 years) tenth then ninth place in 31.29 and 31.25 and, in the 18/overs, Jamie Holmes (BCS) finished sixth and fifth on 30.25 and 29.85 respectively. Swim Bournemouth’s 100m Backstroker Oliver Fairman (13/14 years) achieved eighth in both heats and finals with 1:04.97 and 1:05.01, while Henry Stanbrook (17 years) took sixth and ninth place with 1:00.98 and 1:00.89 in the same event. Also from Swim Bournemouth, Savannah Barman qualified tenth in the 17/over 200m Butterfly with 2:30.59 to finish in ninth place with a time of 2:28.89, while in the 16 years 100m Freestyle Poole’s Thea O’Keefe placed tenth then eighth with times of 1:00.57 and 1:00.44.

Day 3

A second silver medal and more personal bests for Dorset swimmers. BCS’ Ben Samuel qualified first in the 15 years 100m Freestyle with a time of 55.29 to PB in the final on 55.18 and take the silver medal. In the 50m Backstroke Swim Bournemouth’s Henry Stanbrook (17 years) and Amy Brown (12/13 years) both PB’d in heats and finals, with Henry clocking up sixth place on both occasions with times of 28.20 and 28.04 and Amy achieving eighth and tenth placings in 32.45 and 32.37 respectively.

Day 2

An all-girls day for Dorset. Ella Chown (BCS) qualified second in the heats of the 12/13 years 100m Butterfly on 1:06.89, finishing fourth with a PB of 1:06.45, while in the 17/overs Poole’s Madison Kemp qualified third with a PB of 1:03.18 to finish fifth in the final in 1:03.74. Jasmine McCrea (Poole) was back in the pool for the 15 years 200m Breaststroke qualifying seventh in 2:48.91 and PB’ing in the final to finish fourth on 2:44.97.

Day 1

A silver medal and some huge personal bests marked the start of the National Summer Championships 2016 for Dorset swimmers. Qualifying fifth in 1:16.89 for the 16 years 100m Breaststroke, Charlotte James (BCS) PB’d in the final with 1:15.42 to take the silver medal. In the same event Abi Manns (Swim Bournemouth) finished tenth in both heats and finals with times of 1:18.31 and a PB of 1:17.82 respectively. In the 400m Individual Medley both Oliver Fairman (Swim Bournemouth) and Jasmine McCrea (Poole) clocked up big PBs with Oliver knocking off nearly five seconds to qualify seventh on 5:01.88 and Jasmine knocking off six and half seconds to qualify fourth in 5:11.22. Finals placings were ninth for Oliver (13/14 years) with 5:07.04 while Jasmine (15 years) finished in sixth place on 5:13.37. Theo O’Keefe (Poole) qualified first in a PB of 2:07.37 in the 16 years 200m Freestyle to finish in fourth place in the final in 2:08.11.

British Summer Nationals 2016

The British Summer Nationals 2016 at Pond’s Forge, Sheffield ended on 31 July with Dorset swimmers bringing home seven British Nationals medals, three gold and four bronze, and seven Dorset County Long Course Records having been broken (two Senior, five Junior). Competitors at the British Summer Nationals are ranked nationally 1 to 24 in their age group and event. Dorset clubs with swimmers competing were Bournemouth Collegiate SC, Bridport Barracudas SC and Poole SC.

Day 6:

Poole’s Jacob Peters finished the last day of the British Summer Nationals 2016 with a medal-winning, Dorset record-breaking swim in the 16 years 50m Butterfly. Finishing in first place in both heats and finals, Jacob clocked up times of 25.25 and 24.80 respectively, the latter breaking his own Junior long-course record as well as the Senior record held by Seth Chappels (Ferndown) since 2002. In the 13/14 years 200m Backstroke Finn Trehane (BCS) was again on form with personal best swims in both heats and finals, going into the final in ninth place and finishing in seventh with times of 2:17.89 and 2:16.91 respectively. Qualifying tenth in the 19 years 100m Butterfly in 1:02.51, Fiona Hardie (Poole) finished ninth in the final with a time of 1:02.18.

Day 5:

Qualifying in tenth place for the 13/14 years 200m Individual Medley with a heat time of 2:19.57, Finn Trehane (BCS) gave an impressive finals performance to finish in fourth place with a pb of 2:15.86. Likewise Poole’s 17+ years Women’s 400m Freestyle team qualified in tenth place in 3:58.70 to finish in sixth place in the final in 3:55.18. In the 15 years 200m Individual Medley Jasmine McCrea (Poole) finished eleventh in the heats and tenth in the finals with times of 2:25.52 and 2:25.71 respectively and, in a hard fought 15 years 50m Freestyle, Ben Samuel (BCS) qualified in sixth then finished in tenth place in 25.23 and 25.58 respectively.

Day 4:

Following on from his success in the 200m Butterfly, Poole’s Jacob Peters gave a repeat performance in the 16 years 100m Butterfly by finishing first in the heats in a time of 55.87 and taking his second gold medal of the competition in a time of 55.62 in the final. Harriet Perfect qualified for the 16 years 200m Backstroke final in tenth place with a time of 2:22.03, improving her placing in the final to seventh in 2:20.03.

Day 3:

A quieter day for Dorset swimmers and coaches with just Alice Tai (BCS) and the Poole 17+ years Women’s 800m Freestyle team competing. In the Women’s MC 100m Freestyle Alice finished in sixth place with a time of 1:04.40 while Poole’s Jasmine Holmes, Madison Kemp, Leonie Wiehle and Emily Clarke produced a team effort of 8:45.22 to finish in 14th nationally.

Day 2:

Three medals and a further three new County Records for Dorset swimmers on Day 2 of the British Summer Nationals. Jacob Peters (Poole) qualified in first place in the 200m Butterfly, going on to win a gold medal in the 16 years final with a Dorset Junior Record breaking time of 2:02.98. Qualifying in second place in the 15 years 50m Butterfly with a time of 28.48 and setting a new Dorset Junior Record in that event, Poole’s Jasmine McCrea then went on to break that record again with a bronze medal swim and a time of 27.99 in the final. The third and final medal of Day 2 went to Finn Trehane (BCS) who qualified fourth in the 13/14 years 50m Breaststroke with a time of 32.25, further improving his time to 32.02 in the final to finish in bronze position. BCS competitor Kayla van der Merwe (BCS) was also on impressive form. Qualifying in tenth place of the 13/14 years 200m Breaststroke with a time of 2:44.44, Kayla went to finish in fourth place with a time of 2:40.55. In the Women’s MC 100m Backstroke, Alice Tai (BCS) also finished in fourth place in both heats and finals with times of 1:10.32 and 1:08.93.

Day 1:

Day 1 of the British Summer Nationals resulted in a bronze medal for two Dorset swimmers and the long course Male Senior and Junior County Records for 50m Backstroke being broken. Jacob Peters (Poole) qualified in first place in the 16 years 50m Backstroke, knocking over a second from his previous records with a time of 26.59, and going on to finish in third place with a time of 26.64 in the final. A second bronze went to Alice Tai (BCS) in the Women’s MC 100m Butterfly with a time of 1:09.45. Two other BCS swimmers also recorded impressive performances and new personal bests. Kayla van der Merwe qualified in second place for the final of the 13/14 years 50m Breaststroke with a time of 34.06, and finishing in fourth place with a time of 33.85. In the 13/14 years 100m Breaststroke Finn Trehane finished in fifth place in both heats and finals with times of 1:11.70 and 1:09.48 respectively.

ASA National Open Water Festival 2016

The ASA’s inaugural National Open Water Festival took place at South Yorkshire’s Rother Valley Country Park last weekend, with fourteen Age Group and Masters swimmers from Dorset heading north to participate in the event. The two-day Festival incorporates the ASA National Open Water Masters and Age Group Championships as well as a new 1,500m Challenge event with Masters competing in 1.5k and 3k events and age groupers going head to head across 1.5k, 3k, and 5k distances. Following her double gold success in the 19+ years age group at the ASA SouthWest and Dorset County ASA Open Water Championships in June, Poole’s Emily Clarke added silver to her open water medal collection by finishing second in the Girls 19+ years 5k event with a time of 1:06.55, while Swim Bournemouth’s Alexandra Palotai-Avella’s first national open water competition resulted in a bronze medal for a time of 20.43 in the Girls 12 yrs 1.5k event. Dorset’s qualifiers were: East Dorset Open Water – Clare Jevons, Dave Pratten; Poole – Emily Clarke, Jessica Kelleway, Maralyn Lewis, Thea O’Keefe, Liam Openshaw, Ben Porter; Swim Bournemouth – Savannah Barman, Toby Kitchener, Alexandra Palotai-Avella; Seagulls – Miles Ward; Tornadoes of South Dorset – Eve Hewett; West Dorset – Amie Buttle.

Glasgow 2016

At this year’s British Championships and Para-Swimming International Meet held at Tollcross, Dorset was represented by a small group of swimmers from Poole SC and Bournemouth Collegiate, together with four of our County referees. The quartet of British Champs swimmers – Senior Fiona Hardie and Juniors Jasmine Holmes, Harriet Perfect and Jacob Peters – all from Poole SC and a record number of qualifiers for the club, while Alice Tai of BCS was Dorset’s representative at the British Para-Swimming International Meet. For the swimmers, as well as selection for the Olympic Team, the aim for the Juniors was to qualify for the European Junior Team going to Hungary later in the year. Both Harriet and Jacob qualified for European Junior Finals, with Harriet finishing fourth in 200m Backstroke with a time of 2:17.96 and Jacob finishing second (100m Butterfly) and (200m Butterfly) with times of 55.13 and 2:04.48 respectively, both of which are new Dorset County Records. Both Jasmine (200m Freestyle) and Fiona (100m Butterfly) also improved their national rankings. At the Para-Swimming, Alice was equally successful finishing in third place in 100m Butterfly (1:10.69), fourth place 100m Backstroke (1:09.14) and in ninth/tenth place for 50m Freestyle (30.75) and 100m Freestyle (1:05.68) respectively. From our officials, Jill Beard was selected to officiate at the British Championships, while Steve Meter (Weymouth), Sue Podger and Tracey Roberts (both West Dorset) officiated at the Para-Swimming event.

Lake Geneva challenge for Weyport Masters

Weyport Masters 2016(1) Weyport Masters’ Julia Aston and Kate Mason have become the first female duo to swim the length of Lake Geneva, and only the second people in history to have swum the whole length of the lake. Swimming for two hours at a time with support boat alongside, the two-person relay began at the Chateau de Chillon Castle situated off the eastern coastline of the lake, and ended at the Parch des Bains in Geneva. The 44 mile challenge was completed in 28 hours 12 minutes. Monies raised through sponsorship helped purchase a VHF radio for Osprey Leisure Centre with the remainder being donated to a charity for research into Huntington Disease.
